The Position:

SSWC is hiring for a Water Utility Worker I/II—Field Services. They will perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the water system. They include but are not limited to installation, replacement, upgrade, repair, and maintenance of water mains, hydrants, meters, and services, reading of customer meters via electronic meter reading system and manually, valve exercising, and other duties on the water distribution system. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents perform more routine tasks while learning SSWC policies and procedures. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision. Knowledge of various hand tools and ability to drive larger trucks with compressors, dump trucks, vacuum/valve machine trucks, and, eventually, backhoe tractors. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and quick thinker who will be expected to perform various complex, technical, and problem-solving activities within the Field Services Department. Must be able to respond to after-hour emergencies and reside within 30 minutes of the Company Office. Must be able to work some weekends and be on-call for after-hour emergency calls.

 

The Ideal Candidate:

An effective communicator with good customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers and staff.

Be a self-starter, work well with a crew, and be able to work alone.

Will act with integrity and follow the accepted ethical standards of SSWC and applicable laws and regulations.

Must desire to learn new skills and immediately become a productive member of a high-performing team.

Has education equivalent to a High School Diploma or G.E.D., preferably supplemented by college-level water distribution and treatment coursework.

Some general maintenance and repair experience is required (1 year of related water distribution maintenance experience desirable).

Possesses a valid Water Distribution Operator Grade D2 certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board and a State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade T2. Candidates with a D1 or T1 may be considered if they have prior water works experience but must obtain the next level of certification within 12 months of hire.

Possesses a valid California Class C driver’s license.
