Sunny Slope is building a new filtration system. A Liquid-Phase Granular Active Carbon (LGAC is similar to household drinking water filters (ex. Brita) but to a larger scale ) Filter System removes all the VOCs as well as other compounds.   This is possible because the VOCs stick to the surface of the carbon. Activated carbon, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus it has a very large surface area available for collecting VOC molecules.  Due to its high degree of microporosity, just 1 gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 500 m2 (about one tenth the size of a football field).

In LGAC systems the Granular Activated Carbon is suspended in water and is contained in large cylindrical containers.  The water is pumped through the container from top to bottom.  The water leaving the bottom of the container is then fed into the top of another LGAC container to make sure that all VOCs are removed to accommodate the volume of the Sunny Slope pumps, two sets of tanks are required; therefore, the Sunny Slope system will contain four tanks.
